What to expect after your nose surgery, week by week – and how to protect your result.
Healing timeline
Your recovery, week by week
Day 1
You spend the night in hospital. Some pressure and a blocked feeling in the nose are normal; pain is controlled with medication.
Days 2–3
Swelling and bruising reach their peak. Rest with your head elevated and use cold compresses as instructed.
Days 5–8
The splint is usually removed at your final check. Most bruising has faded, and many patients feel ready for gentle sightseeing.
Weeks 2–3
Most patients are back at work and in social life. Light walking is fine; avoid strenuous exercise.
Weeks 4–6
You can gradually return to sport. Avoid resting glasses on the bridge of your nose unless advised otherwise.
Months 3–12
The remaining swelling – especially at the tip – settles slowly. Your final result becomes visible after about a year.
Aftercare tips
Your surgeon’s personal instructions always come first. In general, these simple rules help your nose heal well:
- Sleep with your head raised on two pillows for the first one to two weeks.
- Do not blow your nose for about two weeks; sneeze with your mouth open.
- Avoid heavy lifting, bending forward and strenuous sport for at least three to four weeks.
- Protect your nose from the sun and use a high-factor sunscreen for several months.
- Do not smoke – it slows healing and increases the risk of complications.
- Take only the medication your doctor has prescribed, and avoid blood-thinning painkillers unless approved.

When should I contact the doctor?
Contact us straight away if you notice heavy or persistent bleeding, fever, increasing pain, or swelling that suddenly gets worse. In an emergency, contact your local emergency services.
