What is revision rhinoplasty?
Revision rhinoplasty, also called secondary rhinoplasty, is an operation to correct or improve the result of a previous nose surgery. Some patients are unhappy with the appearance of their nose; others have developed breathing problems after their first operation.
Common reasons for revision
- An over-reduced bridge or a “scooped” profile
- A pinched, drooping or asymmetric tip
- A remaining bump or a crooked nose
- Breathing difficulties after the first operation
- Visible irregularities under the skin
Why revision surgery is more complex
After a previous operation, the internal structure of the nose has changed, scar tissue has formed and cartilage may be missing. Revision rhinoplasty therefore needs careful planning and, in many cases, cartilage grafts to rebuild support. When can revision be performed?
In most cases, it is best to wait at least 12 months after the first operation, so that swelling has fully settled and the tissues have healed. Earlier intervention is only considered for specific functional problems.
