What is piezo rhinoplasty?

Piezo rhinoplasty – also called ultrasonic rhinoplasty – is a technique in which the nasal bones are shaped with a piezoelectric instrument instead of traditional chisels, hammers and rasps. The instrument works with fine ultrasonic micro-vibrations that cut and sculpt bone while largely sparing the soft tissues around it: the lining of the nose, blood vessels and nerves.

“Piezo” is not a different type of operation but a different tool. It is used within a rhinoplasty – most often when the bony part of the nose needs to be reduced, narrowed or straightened. The cartilage of the nasal tip is still shaped with conventional precise techniques.

How is piezo different from traditional bone work?

• Traditional technique: a hump is removed with a rasp or chisel, and the nasal bones are narrowed with controlled fractures made with a small chisel (osteotomies).
• Piezo technique: the bone is shaped and cut under direct vision with ultrasonic micro-vibrations, which allows very controlled, step-by-step contouring of the bridge and smoother bony surfaces.

Because the soft tissues are better protected, many patients experience less bruising and swelling around the eyes – although recovery always varies from person to person and depends on the extent of the surgery.

Who is piezo rhinoplasty for?

Piezo is most useful when the bony part of the nose needs work – for example a dorsal hump, a wide bony vault or a crooked nose after an injury. If only the tip of your nose needs refinement, bone work is often not necessary; in that case a tip rhinoplasty may be enough.
